What’s your favorite part about being a dachshund owner?
Dachshunds are hilarious — they’re little comedians. They really are just hilarious dogs. And they’re big snugglers, too. Dave will take his super long body and dart to the foot of the bed. It’s as if he’s a heating pad for your lower body. In general, dachshunds are the type of dog that just love hard on their people.
What’s one of Dave’s favorite activities?
I spent six months teaching him to fetch. He won’t go for a ball. You know nerf darts? When I get the little nerf gun out, he starts to freak out as soon as he hears the air noise. I shoot the dart, and he fetches it and brings it back. He can do it for an hour.
Tell me about a favorite memory with Dave since you got him.
We were at Chrissy Fields in San Francisco [where we used to live], out on the beach. It was one of those typical not-too-hot-not-too-cold San Francisco days. We got sandwiches and we were sitting on the beach. Dave loves the beach! He was being cute and creeping up my fiancé’s leg, and then all of a sudden he launched off of his knee and chomped on the sandwich. It was one of those moments that was so funny that it was impossible to be mad.
What’s your favorite nickname for dachshunds?
I call them weenies. They’re wiener dogs, but they have a lot of feelings, so they’re all weenies.
What advice would you give to a first-time dachshund owner?
Patience and consistency. It’s all about those two words. Because dachshunds are so smart and stubborn, you really have to train them. And they live forever, too, so the patience and consistency required with training pay off in the long run. It’s a challenge, but you’ll be glad you did.
Do you own Dave or does Dave own you?
All dachshunds own their owner.
